Last Thursday, we focused just on building. I gave the kids three challenges. The first challenge was a color challenge. They had to build a creation using only one color. We had a submarine, a race car, and a dinosaur as some of their ideas.
The next challenge was to build a vehicle. This was more difficult since there are only about 4 wheels spread out among the 12 bags of pieces. The kids have great imaginations and came up with fantastic wheel-less vehicles. There were spaceships, boats, and even a vehicle based on a combination of animals.
The last challenge was to build a place where a person or an animal could live. We had a dog house, several horse stables, and a high rise building. My favorite was a house that included a stove, a couch, a tv, and a lawn. The details were very impressive. We had a few minutes at the end of class to color pictures of personalized minifigures.

Roll and Build 9/22 and Graphs 9/29
We've been having a lot of fun in Lego Math. In our first class, the kids had some time to just play with their bags of Lego pieces and they built some great stuff. Then we did an activity called "Roll and Build." The kids rolled 6-sided dice to see how many pieces they could take out of their bag. They rolled multiple times and used their pieces to build unique creations. We then repeated the activity with 10-sided dice. Some of the builds included: horses, spaceships, race cars, a Pokemon gym, and a grocery store.
This last week, we made graphs using our Lego bricks. First, everyone in the class took turns rolling a die. As we rolled, we recorded the results by placing a Lego in the correct column on our graph. After recording all the numbers, we traced the bricks to finish the graph. Then we did a second graph that recorded everyone's favorite color. At the end, we answered questions about the graphs, such as "Which number was rolled the most?" and "What was the least favorite color?" (The answer to that last one was a tie: pink and yellow. I was shocked that no one chose pink.)
